Artist's Statement

Self Portrait in Mirror, circa 1985, Robert Delaney

My love of art goes all the way back to my childhood, when I developed a strong artistic ability at a very young age. My early artwork consisted mostly of pencil or pen & ink drawings. When it came time to head to college, I pursued a B.A. in Advertising Design. While the focus there was commercial art, the program included a foundation of required fine art classes such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and photography.

I have continued to work in the graphic design field to this day, and have been a self-employed web designer since 2002. But all the while I have continued to pursue fine art—mostly in the form of drawing and photography. Several attempts, over the years, to teach myself to paint had ended in frustration.

In 2014 I decided to take on the painting challenge once more—but this time, rather than going with the self-taught approach, I started taking painting classes. The classes I’ve taken have enabled me to move past the initial hurdle of learning to control the medium for the first time in my life, and my skills have continued to strengthen and evolve in both acrylic and watercolor.

I have been a member of the Artisans Collective since 2014 and joined the Community House Artists in 2016. My work has been shown in many local venues, including The Yarmouth History Center, and Couleur Collection in Falmouth. A selection of my photographs are on permanent display at InterMed in Yarmouth.
